Survey on pest control: what's the best way to deal with amorous squirrels?

Remove their nuts?Survey on pest control: what's the best way to deal with amorous squirrels?
Definitely remove their nuts. And if you're a guy and it's female, you know what to do.Survey on pest control: what's the best way to deal with amorous squirrels?
Birth control pills or IUDs.
A pellet rifle. Or if you've got enough land; a shotgun.
Haha! great question and I agree with the quote about nuts... ;) xxxx

Birth control for squirrels? Are you kidding me?

Santa Monica, California is planning to spend 2-10 dollars of birth control vaccines on each squirrel caught. Apparenly a small percentage of squirrels may harbor the bubonic plague. Who has ever been attacked by a squirrel? For crying out loud those things don't even get close to humans. Don't you think our tax dollars could be better spent?Birth control for squirrels? Are you kidding me?
It's no joke...-%26amp; it's not really the squirrels attacking humans that the Aurthorities are concerned about. The plague is usually spread animal to animal- and dogs ESPECIALLY, love to chase squirrels. If the infected squirrels start spreading the plague to other animals- suddenly you have a really BIG problem on your hands, %26amp; that's why California wants to put them on the ';pill';. I know the idea sounds alittle ';weird';- but there IS some method to the madness.Birth control for squirrels? Are you kidding me?
no, and be glad as certain groups have been hunting these small animals down for FOOD! I can't say the group as I will get a violation from Yahoo! it happens and not to just these creatures but other small animals and birds too
The plague is transmitted by fleas. Squirrels carry the plague bacteria in their bloodstream. The flea bites the squirrel and slurps up the ifected blood. ow the flea is carrying the plague bacteria. A person walking in the area where the flea resides gets bitten by the same flea. Now the person has the plague.

So, lowering the number of squirrels does have a direct impact on the possibility of YOU contracting the black plague.
Don't Be Fooled !! It is not birth control, they put the squirrels to sleep, then house them in a big squirrel corral, THEN, they declare squirrels an endangered species, steal prime squirrel land from it's owners, get millions in grants to restore the squirrels,,,,all that's left is to drive the herd of squirrel over, declare success and forever be known as the defenders of squirrel rites...and give them the right to vote sometime down the road....

My dog is out of control! he's 5 years old, and when ever he sees a squirrel (or some animal) he goes crazy..?

and he's ripped the screens numerous times, just today he was in my brothers room, and someone how got the screen off and ran out the window. he hates cats, so i'm afraid one day he'll do it again, and get into a big brawl with a cat. i can't afford obidience school, whenever he does it i get mad and say ';bad dog'; but he still does it! we need the windows open cause we don't have air conditioning. please help! thanks! :)My dog is out of control! he's 5 years old, and when ever he sees a squirrel (or some animal) he goes crazy..?
The only answer is training. If you can't afford classes just look on the internet there are some very good guides.

By the way getting mad won't help at all. He will just take it as you getting excited too and this will probably make him worse.

Finally he won't get into a 'big brawl' with a cat - he will kill the cat.My dog is out of control! he's 5 years old, and when ever he sees a squirrel (or some animal) he goes crazy..?
This is natural dog behavior. He is most certainly not a 'bad dog' for following his instincts (and once the fixed action pattern starts it is not really possible to stop it unless the object/prey suddenly disappears). And getting mad about it only serves your purposes, not the dog's.

Managing your dog's environment (closing windows/doors) unless he is being closely supervised and until you learn to 'read' your dog is probably your best option at this point.

Expecting him to learn (overnight no less) not to go through screens is unrealistic - especially since he has been reinforced for this behavior every time he has succeeded in the past.

Sorry, close the windows or keep him under constant watch. Your options are limited without professional help.
I have a 5 year old Shepard Lab Mix. Same squirrelly behavior. Shepards are high energy. Take him to the dog park and let him run it off or... search for a doggie day camp near you. They will sleep like babies.

I tried the book ';The Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training';- and I love it. I collect idiot books, and this one has been the most helpful by far.
I recommend exercising your dog. A tired dog, is a happy dog. Nice long walks, runs, and off leash activity!

You could also look into things like lure coursing. Good for prey driven dogs! You don't have to pay a ton of money to keep your dog occupied.
He's got a high prey drive. He doesn't understand ';bad dog'; so it does no good to punish him. You need to train him. If you didn't have the money for training, you shouldn't have this breed of dog. You have to teach him ';leave it';. It's going to take time and effort on your part since you don't want professional help with this. Here is a guide to help you:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2044068_teach-do鈥?/a>

You will need to practice this EVERYday with him, several times a day for no more than 10 minute increments at a time. Eventually, he will get to the point where you can say ';leave it'; to anything (squirrels, works especially well for us on walks with cats, lizards and crickets) and your dog will not go after it. Our female has a very high prey drive. It took months and months of reinforcement before she got this. Does this mean she leaves things alone when we aren't around? No. Without someone there to say the command, she will go after whatever she sees. However, it has been helpful for walks because she lots of exercise. Also, when we aren't home, she stays in the bedroom where she has no access to the windows (can't see outside, can't find something to go after). We put her in after an hour long walk and leave her bullysticks, bullycubes, kongs, etc. to keep her occupied.

Good luck. You will have to work with this very hard on your own. Set your dog up for success. As a responsible owner, you have the power to do this!

Squirrels are nibbling away seedlings & shoots in garden ( Delhi). How to control menace without killing them?

Sprinkle cayenne pepper on the dirt around the plants and they will stay away. It's a great, humane trick and is highly recommended at the Scott Common Sense Community

How can I control (kill) rats in my backyard but not hurt squirrels , pets or wild birds?

I have lots of trees and foliage and don't particularly like poisons. How can I control (kill) rats in my backyard but not hurt squirrels , pets or wild birds?
Build a rat house that has small entrances that only rats can enter (this can be a sturdy cardboard box). Put in rotting food and line the bottom of the rat house with sitcky rat traps. The rats will enter the house and get caught on the traps and die quickly and humanely.

I would not recommend letting rats go, as they will find their way back over and over and over and over..... Besides, rats procreate very, very quickly and carry a multitude of diseases (responsible for the black plaque, remember?), much more than mice. And, because rats will eat decaying matter, they have a high incidence of rabies from eating rabid animals.

A cat will be a moderate solution as simply the presence helps keep vermin down. But. rats are large and most cats aren't interested in rats. How can I control (kill) rats in my backyard but not hurt squirrels , pets or wild birds?
A BB gun will do the trick!
get a cat
You need some cats.
get a cat. squirrels are too fast to get caught. generally.
locate a high profile bait station where the rat sized snap traps can fit inside. It will keep larger animals and kids out and I have never seen a squirrel go inside one. The preference though would be to place bait blocks in them. The blocks lock down and won't easily come out. Avoid the pellets for as mentioned they can be removed and taken elsewhere and I don't trust a rat enough to think he won't drop any.
Go to a good garden center or farm store and ask if they have Ramik Green. You pour the pellets down the rat hole and securely covered the hole with a rock, brick, board, etc.,--something sturdy--you can weight down a board. The rats take it away to their nests and then the rats are gone. I see where you can order this product on line as well.
Don't kill the rats! That's terrible! Try humane traps that would trap rats but not kill them-- you can just release them into the wild.

No. I would suggest opening the doors and making a lot of noise.... Enough noise to make it want to leave and never come back.
No. I think the only time I ever called animal control was when I saw a large dog playing chicken with cars on a busy highway. I didn't want the dog or anyone else to get hurt.
Thank goodness this has never happened to me. I would have probably killed myself in trying to run from the thing.

No way! So there's a lot of squirrels, but so what! I love squirrels! Does it matter if there's a ton of squirrels? NO! They do NOTHING to hurt people. That's has got to be the lamest idea ever.Do you think squirrels need birth control?
    I agree with you! lol

I love squirrels too, and nature has a way of making sure that they don't overrun the towns and cities where they live.

I live in a city where, unfortunately, bunnies have become a 'problem' (according to city council). The city has tried to set up a 'birth control' program by having the captured bunnies neutered (lol) with no luck! (imagine that?) Sadly, the program didn't last long, and now the poor bunnies are being caught and killed. It's sad but true, and to think, that most of these bunnies USED to be pets, people can be so cruel! :(Do you think squirrels need birth control?
Of course. There is no good thing about squirrels. They are a major pest around here. They are not native, and there are no natural enemies. So they just take over. They wreck havoc on everything... they have no useful purpose. And they are so stupid. They don't know they are not wanted!!

    Get rid of them!!!

Pellet gun, traps, if you have bird feeders out put peeper in with the seeds the squirrels will burn there tounges but the birds don't get phased by it.

Also try and spread some human hair(from shaving or haircuts) around the yard if they smell people they might stay away.

    Also wolf urine
My advice would be to get a squirrel feeder just for them and place it as far as possible from your nice plants. This way hopefully they'll go after the easy food left out just for them and leave your plants or bird food alone.

This is also a humane option.

Not enough to make that big of a difference, unless you have a web of skin from your knees to your elbows like a flying squirrel does. Can you control the speed of free fall is you spread out like a squirrel?
Of course you can. You will fall much faster straight down, head first than spread out like a flying squirrel.
Yes. spreading your body out flat when falling makes a larger surface area for air to pass around making you slow down because there is more push against you.

Effective control for squirrels eating my strawberries?

Since the berries are planted below brambles the birds aren't a problem but the squirrels are having a feast. help?Effective control for squirrels eating my strawberries?
    Hi

It our Southern States, it takes about 3 squirrels to make a meal.

But for a more humane answer, you need to cover it with small chicken wire.

S1lentEffective control for squirrels eating my strawberries?
I read that buying moth balls (the round ball kind) in the ground in any bed you want to protect is effective against squirrels---and it works! I use them in pots and beds myself when I've had a squirrel pest population. You do have to cover them with a bit of dirt so bird won't eat them, but that doesn't effect the squirrels smelling them. In addition, you could also brush you cat, pull the hair off the brush and scatter clumps of hair around the bed. That's supposed to help repel critters. (though the hair won't last as long as the moth balls!)
Get some wire and put it over your plants. Put a post in to keep the wire and birds off your berries.
Have you tried tying aluminum pie tins on posts? The flash and noise they make frighten them.

How to control the speed of squirrel cage synchonorous motor?

    Gears via manual transmission :)

Circuits for speed control of squirrel cage induction motors using thyristors?

speed control without variation in torque or output..Circuits for speed control of squirrel cage induction motors using thyristors?
Thyristors are no longer used for this application. IGBT are now used. The problem with thyristors is that they require a commutating current to turn them off and so they were only used in early generation drives when transistors could not be produced to handle the power.

The basic power circuit can be found in most manufacturers manuals. I have put the link to the Toshiba site that you can download a manual from or go to ABB, Allen Bradley, Siemens, Square D etc etc etc.

    http://www.toshiba.com/ind/downloads_mai鈥?/a>

The control circuits are much more complex and I would see little point in trying to make one from any practical point of view bearing in mind the low cost of drives.Circuits for speed control of squirrel cage induction motors using thyristors?
The only way to control the speed of a squirrel cage motor is by using a variable frequency drive (VFD). The VFD contains a rectifier to change incoming AC to DC. An inverter then changes the DC back to AC at a controlled frequency. VFDs can be constructed using thyristors, but transistors have been used for many years.

If just the motor voltage is reduced, the motor torque capability will be reduced. If the load is a fan or centrifugal pump, the motor speed will be reduced to a speed at which the reduced load torque matches the motor torque capability. If the load does not have a torque requirement that is lower at reduced speeds, the motor will stall when the voltage is reduced.

I'd like to get hawks to roost on my property to control the squirrel population. Any suggestions?

First of all, hawks are an endangered species, so any interference with them at all is against the law.

Look up the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened

    Species.

If you want to get rid of the squirrel population, go to a garden supply store like Agway, buy a bottle of coyote

urine, seriously, and put it around your property in littke containers that hang from bushes, trees, etc. I swear on a stack of Bibles that this works. I have not had a squirrel in my yard for 2 hyears, and I live in the middle if nowhere in VT. I was originally using the uribe to get rid of skunks, which works really well. Fox urine is also recommended, but the coyote works better.

This is a lot easier than trying to get a wild hawk to roost on your property, trust me.

The urine does not bother house pets or birdies. But, you out the urine out, and it makes skunks/squirrels/rodents think a fox or coyote has marked this territory as his own. It is not expensive either.I'd like to get hawks to roost on my property to control the squirrel population. Any suggestions?
Thx for taking the time to write. My property is 100+ acres and already has coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions (not to mention our Labs) wandering around, and that hasn't intimidated the squirrels. I need more predators - but not those who will eat my dogs!

Had similar problem some time back. I think the best way is to look around and block off whatever access holes there may be. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, block off access if there are babies inside. Take a spray bottle and put a few spoonfuls of cyenne pepper in it and fill with water. Spray the areas where the squirrels are and where you don't want them to be. This works well for most anything like bugs, dogs peeing spots, and things like that. You have to do it often especially after it rains, but it won't hurt them and they'll go somewhere else.

Its been my experience that the 177 preformed better for me.

I get a faster muzzle velocity and much deeper penetration with the 177.

I first tried a 22 thanking it would be better, I was incorrect.

My son came over with his 177 Gamo and had me try it out.

Both weapons were scope mounted and very accurate.

I was impressed to see that the 177 was blowing completely through the squirrels chest cavity and resulting in 1 shot clean kills on the 4 squirrels that gave me a shoot around my house.

Luckily I had barrowed the 22 cal from a friend to try out to see if I liked it, and I did not.

I went out and bought a Gamo and mounted a scope on it and have rid my surrounding yard of squirrels and rabbits and a few snakes, only one required a follow up shot and that was a rabbit that happened to turn away from me just as I shoot.

But I do prefer the 177 at 1000 to 1200 fps at those speeds the cant help but blow all the way through your target.

There are no pellet guns which can be HUMANELY used on squirrels. At best you will be leaving wounded or injured animals running around. Anytime you raise a gun pointed at any animal you must be positive that you can dispatch the animal as quickly and humanely as possible. As hunters and shooters we have an obligation to killed without undue pain. If there is any doubt at all do not shoot. I would suggest a humane live trap to round them up.
Whatever gun you purchase just be sure to get the pellets that are designed for hunting, they come either pointed or hollow point, they get the job done.
Um... if your looking for power and you want it relatively cheap, go with the Crosman Quest 1000. If you want a scope get the Quest 1000X. My friend has this gun and loves it.This is a break barrel gun, meaning you wont need to buy Co2. Get some good pointed or hallow point pellets and this will work well. Since this gun goes 1000 FPS, it should kill squirrels easily. Some really good, powerful pellets are the gamo raptor pellets. For some great deals go to www.airgundepot.com. You can find replica guns there too, such as the Walther PPK. I hope this helps!
The old Crossman 760 did all of my squirrel killing many years ago. Took off a few tails by accident when I missed the body. Steel BB's are best. Pellets are hard to get used to but if that's all you shoot then you'll know your Kentucky windage and elevation. I bought a newer Crossman 760 a few years ago but it doesn't like BB's. The old barrels were solid steel and the newer barrels are too thin and less accurate for BB's. Might be my eyes are not as sharp, either.
Benjamin is the best-not sure of price------if you cant get a Benjamin get a good quality pump action.
For squirrel control most .177 caliber air guns can do the job,

but to really take them out, use a .22. If you want a very good

.177 the Crosman 1377 is a very good choice.

You can also get a stock for it to turn it into a carbine rifle.

I have a modified version of this gun and it's dead nuts accurate and has a effective range of 35 yrds.

If you want more power and don't mind pumping, you can't go wrong with a classic in either .177 or .22.

Both a very good and very accurate, I have one of each, and have been shooting my dad's gun since I was 8 yrs old.

If you want very good quality and high performance, I'd go with these.

The Beemans are very high quality adult air guns. They are made by Weihrauch in Germany. The Stingray is made by Webley of England. These guns are some of the best that you can buy. Very accurate, very powerful and can take squirrel out to 45-50 yrds, if you can hit them. Just remember that at those ranges you'll need a good scope that is springer rated. You can't just use any rifle scope. Adult air guns are quite diffrent, they have a forward/reverse recoil that can break scopes, no kidding. I've broken, rather my rifles have

broken a few scopes because of this.

I own all of the guns that I've recommended and they all can

take small animals very easily, but only if you are accurate

    with the gun.

Also something to remember, don't belive the velocity numbers that the manufactures or anyone else says what

the gun shoots. They say that as a way to increase sales.

They use the lightest pellets when they do their tests, and because of that the gun isn't very accurate. High muzzle velocity, light pellets, the pellet fly off in any direction. It's

common knowledge in the air gun world. Some thing else to think of. When you get a gun, try diffrent pellets until you find one that your gun likes. Something else I had to learn when I got into air guns, not all pellets work. Some work much better than others. I found that Beeman Feild Target Specials in .177 and .22 work very well. It's kinda like the standard pellet to shoot when getting a new gun. All of us air gunners

will start with this pellet first. Most, if not all air guns shoot this

pellet very well, then we try others to see what else works.

    Good luck.
